Just to briefly intervene although I lack the novella ability of you two:
There is no soul. To shamefully reference Dawkins, just because you believe in an invisible Unicorn or a Flying Spaghetti Monster does not mean that either exists. There is a multitude of religions all stemming from man's grasping at the hope of God. There is no soul, nerves give us feeling, and an advanced nervous system interprets those feeling as emotions. If all living things have a soul, how come insects and plants and even fish don't feel pain? they lack advanced central nervous systems.

Have you ever seen a fish being clubbed in the head with a høtt (basically a piece of wood with a nail at the end, couldn't find a pic of it)? I'd say that fish most definetly feel pain. Also these sites claim that fish does feel pain: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2983045.stm , http://www.nofishing.net/FishFeelPain.asp , http://www.firstscience.co.uk/SITE/edit ... 092003.asp , http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.h ... A9659C8B63 and http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn3673

Also, this page talks about the response from plants when they are cut, although it could be debated if it is a reaction to pain (how would a plant be able to feel pain like an animal or a human would do?): http://www.firstscience.com/home/perspe ... _1818.html

As for insects, it doesn't seem like they feel pain in the way e.g. a dog or a cat does, so I'll give you that one. And besides, why would the soul necessarily have anything to do with the central nervous system?

Plants don't feel pain, but they do have a certain response to being cut and such. As the article says, they lack a central nervous system and cannot even comprehend the concept.

That plant-feelings study is a load of crap, I will forever regard those findings as either erroneous or an anomaly

I believe in the existence of the soul because I sold mine to Satan in exchange for divine infernal powers. Satan isn't stupid, y'know - he wouldn't just empower me for free.

 Well, it wouldn't really be correct to refer to it as a feeling, it's more like a reaction. A plant doesn't have the mental ability needed to comprehend the concepts of pleasure and pain, so it can't really feel pain, only react to harm.

Humans have souls, but no other living things do. God told us that we pwn all other life in terms of importance. :)

But what logical reason do you have for this belief in a soul?
